Bruinswald

Bruinswald

Bruinswald is a relatively small town, for being such a major agricultural hub. The population is primarily humans and mammalian creatures, with a few reptilians and avians moving in in recent years. Situated near an enormous forest, the town is home to several dozen large farms that take full advantage of the region's temperate climate, as well as the blessings the forest seems to bestow upon them. The town was originally founded near a small shrine at the edge of the woods, and it wasn't too long after the founding that local farmers figured out that leaving offerings at this shrine tended to result in bumper crops.

Naturally, this practice continued. The shrine became a place of power, and the forest with it. Nobody logs in that forest. Nobody cuts down a single tree. Dead wood is collected daily, and the kitsune who live in the forest keep it safe for the citizens and travellers. In return, the foxes receive a small amount of food for free, from each crop.

To the west of Bruinswald is the sea, roughly a week's steady ride by horseback. To the east, a mountain range. To the south, the plains open up and extend immensely, leading to the rest of the continent. Bruinswald is a temperate climate, but when the weather gets nasty, it gets very nasty. Storms capable of levelling smaller villages roll through about twice per year, during the rainy season. When winter comes, it hits either with lethally destructive force, or barely gets cold, with few compromises in-between.

Haven's Reach

A few days' ride to the north of Bruinswald is Haven's Reach, also known as “The City of a Thousand Steps”, a large and bustling city carved into an oceanside cliff. Within the city are two formally recognised districts; the cliffside “Climber's District” named after the term used for birds ascending in flight, and the “Depths District” which rests upon the surface of the ocean below. Both districts have their own distinct demographics, with the Climber's District mostly populated by Avians and other winged creatures, and the Depths District is mostly Otters and other semi-amphibious creatures. The long-standing, close-knit cooperation between the two has maintained Haven's Reach security, and helped it become an important trade hub for the region and it's surroundings.

The Depths District is well known for it's seafood and other ocean-born products, and is home to most of the cities restaurants and bars, while the Climber's District is dominated by a huge cluster of markets and bazaars. Haven's Reach even boasts a specially constructed landing zone for the prototype airships being used to trade goods across even longer ranges. The resulting extended range has further strengthened the growth and diversity of the Haven's Reach markets, and allowed even the most inland towns and cities to experience fresh seafood.

In recent history, the city was attacked by the pirate, Hecate Mirrorblood, and is still in the process of rebuilding from her destructive rampage. Thankfully, very few citizens were gravely wounded.

Three Rivers

The Valley of Three Rivers is a lush, mostly flat, lightly forested area of verdant vegetation to the south-west of Bruinswald. Tucked away and lacking anything of strategic importance, the valley has enjoyed the complete indifference of the rest of the world towards it; it is a peaceful, quiet, poor place, where people don't have a lot but they also don't go hungry.

The Valley is lead by a collective of elders from several of it's villages. The current largest is Thorou, a village swollen with refugees from other villages, who's elder is an ancient elf. Another is Kertoo, a village deep in the woods lead by an elderly vixen named Ichabod who feels the weight of her age heavily.

In the center of the valley is the Lake of Three Rivers, where the Pelican Sage makes his abode. A wise and old bird, it's rumored he knows water-magic, and is skilled in Iron Feather Style.

The valley is home to a unique species of tree with multi-colored leaves, which when burnt, tends to burn very brightly and give off multi-colored smoke.

Farther to the south lie the massive farms of Tolna and the chiefs who command them. The farms are always looking for more workers, but the region is lacking in labour supply. The farms tend to operate only a slight step up from slavery, with little consideration to morals or external oversight.

The valley has been suffering a rash of fires due to the depredations of the Mask Bandits, a group of brigands and thugs under the command of O-Tsoro.

Western Sea

Burning Sands

A far away island on the Western Sea, the Isle of Burning Sands is a vast, boiling hot desert, ruled by the war-like lord of the Palace of Cinder, O-Loro. One thousand years ago, O-Loro threatened to sail from the Burning Sands to conquer the world, so great mages work together to create a massive wall of water which surrounds the island, preventing any vast fleet from sailing out, and trapping O-Loro inside his own palace.

The spell weakens as time goes on, and occasionally, small trade ships can make it out from the Water-Wall which comes pouring down onto the sky. The Burning Sands today suffers from political unrest, as the immortal O-Loro's hold on his realm loosens. There are many treasures to be found by the adventurous, but many dangers to be discovered as well.

People

Leaders

Hecate Mirrorblood

Seafaring terror Hecate Mirrorblood is a pirate and Bladesinger; a profession combining arcane prowess and defences with virtuosic bladework to devastating effect. While she is apparently human, her skin and hair are both exceptionally pale. Her destructive spree of piracy was accompanied by a magically conjured super storm, and all the towns she hit were shielded by illusions so neighbors wouldn't see or hear the destruction until it was far too late.

A group of adventurers confronted her crew and defeated most of them, but barely survived the encounter themselves. When Mirrorblood made her appearance the beleaguered adventurers exchanged words rather than blows with the notorious pirate, where they learned that the cause of her violent rampage was a search for someone precious to her.

Mirrorblood had lost her wife Shanoa, and was told she'd been reborn into a new body; a girl with silver eyes and a starburst pattern around the pupil.

O-Tsoro

A powerful and disgraced sorcerer-general from a distant land, O-Tsoro is a master of the Internal Sea Style; a martial art requiring inner peace. The extensive training required by the style allows the user to utilise the whole their bodies in order to inflict terrible destruction.

Presently, O-Tsoro has taken a position as the commander of the Mask Bandits, a collection of assorted brigand and thugs that terorize the Three Rivers region. Their motives are still unknown.
