The Collector

This is an old revision of the document!

The Collector

A figure of much infamy and no small amount of fear, nobody can generally agree on who or what, exactly, The Collector may be. Identified only by their mud-splattered gravedigger garments, The Collector never seems to be the same individual twice, varying in height, weight, even species and sex… but witnesses are always certain as to their identity, even if they had no prior knowledge of The Collector.

Theories vary as to their “identity”. A powerful undead? A deity incognito? A shadowy organization of necromancers? Nobody knows. But what is known is their tendency to take an interest in certain Adventurers, often but not always Necromancers or other dabblers in life and death. Such Adventurers are watched carefully by The Collector… who waits for them to die in the course of their work.

Such Adventurers have their bodies swiftly recovered… or whatever is left. After a few days, that Adventurer is resurrected through some unknown method that seems to be equal parts alchemy, divine magic, and mundane surgery. They come back more or less intact… though often sickened by some residual part of the procedure or rendered slightly unstable by the rigors of this peculiar “revival”.

The Collector has intervened in other ways, though very rarely, and usually only in instances involving evil undead and necromancers. An agent appears to a hero to tell them the location of an archlich's phylactery. The bones of an elder dragon slated for reanimation are stolen away in the night. A party seeking the method to destroying an alchemically animated monster find someone has delivered them a copy of the notes written by its creator.

Nobody can agree what The Collector hopes to gain by these methods. Some theorize they're a benevolent force, aiding heroes in destroying necromancers who would use their arts for evil. Some believe they only wish to eliminate competition, and those who refuse to bend the knee. But many desperate adventurers find themselves unwilling to question the source of their aid too heavily…
